APPEARANCE DETAILS
Appearance:
Miles stands at slightly below average height, although it might be a stretch to call him short. Having spent most of his life in England, Miles is pale most of the time and bronzed for a few weeks after visiting his relatives in Australia. His frame is, in his own words, "slender", and in the words of others, "stick thin", although his tennis playing has given him a fair amount of upper body strength and hidden muscle. Miles inherited his father's sharp features; narrow, steel-grey eyes, thin, dark eyebrows, a narrow, pointed nose, small ears and rounded cheekbones leading down to a triangular jaw and sharp, pointed chin. His chin-length, ash-blonde hair is usually combed back, with a few shorter locks dangling over his forehead. His face is completely shaved save for a small chin strip. He enjoys making up progressively more melodramatic and heroic stories to explain the small scar on his left cheek, the rather unromantic truth being that he fell off his bike when he was 5. He wears wire framed glasses that have an unfortunate tendency to slide down his nose.
Clothing Style:
Miles makes a point of dressing well, favouring black and white outfits and having a particular affinity for pinstripes. He usually wears an open, white, knee length longcoat over a black shirt and black pinstriped pants. He very rarely wears shorts or anything with short sleeves.
Special Accessories:
He is never seen without a featureless, silver necklace, which was given to him as a birthday present from his now-deceased little sister. Outside of school, he almost always wears a white trilby with a black band.
PERSONALLY
Over-all Personality:
Miles is an extremely composed, rational individual. He rarely displays any emotions other than vague amusement. This reservedness should not be mistaken for coldness, however. He is slow to trust, and if he calls you a friend then you can rest assured that you have thoroughly earned it. Because of this, while he is on good terms with the majority of the student body, there are very few that he actually calls friends. Miles is very protective of his friends, and despite the fact that he abhors violence, if you ever do anything to intentionally hurt one of his friends he will personally make sure you regret it.
Although he rarely shows it, let alone talks about it, he is still carrying a lot of pain from the death of his little sister. It was this loss that lead to his uneasiness in regards to displaying his own emotions. He only opens up around his closest friends, preferring not to burden people with his own problems. He keeps the death of his sister a secret because of a fear of vulnerability.
Miles is scientific to a fault. He has a deep-seated desire to understand everything, which has lead to his prodigious level of competency with nanokinesis. On the subject of his gift, the fact that he cannot adequately explain how and why nanokinesis works frustrates him to no end. Miles has often bemoaned the fact that students are only allowed to take one science subject at once. Miles believes that everything can be explained through science, and that declaring that something is "magic" or "unexplainable" is a lazy and cowardly way out. He desires nothing more than to further his own knowledge of the universe, and perhaps, in time, further mankind's knowledge of the universe.
Of course, an inquisitive nature can only get you so far, and Miles' views regarding science would be impractical if he didn't have some serious brainpower. He is talented with numbers, and can easily understand even the most daunting of scientific concepts.
A brainy, bespectacled science-lover, Miles is a nerd by his own admission. He reads a lot of science fiction and speculative fiction, has logged an ungodly amount of hours on Team Fortress 2 and has a Stormtrooper helmet sitting on top of the cabinet in his dorm. He has no shame about being a nerd, in fact, he considers nerdiness to be a virtue, a mark of personal honesty.
Having grown up in England to Australian parents, Miles speaks with a English accent that has an Australian intonation that becomes more prominent when he's upset or angry. He also swears like a sailor, a trait that he inherited from his father. Naturally, he tries, often unsuccessfully, to cut down on the swearing when going about his councilor duties.

BACKGROUND
History:
Professor James Kroma was a cellular biologist working for the University of Sydney when he met April West, florist and former B-movie actress. No one would have expected the level-headed, mild-mannered biology professor to end up falling head-over-heels in love with Ms. West, a well known romanticist and cloud cuckoolander, but as the saying says, opposites attract. Shortly after their marriage, James was offered a job by the Institute of Cancer research in London. This was an offer that, for the sake of his conscience and reputation, he couldn't refuse. So, the couple left their families in Australia and moved to London.
Just over a year after migrating, April fell pregnant. Not only pregnant, but carrying twins. The two children were name Marley and Miles Kroma, after April's parents. As James' time was consumed almost entirely by his research, and April was unwilling to close her flower shop, the twins spent most of their childhood under the watch of several rather halfhearted nannies. As a result, when they weren't playing tennis the pair had to make their own entertainment.
For Miles, this usually involved reading. While poring over a high-school biology textbook that Marley had decided was too boring for her, Miles discovered his first love; science. Before he was even in primary school, he was familiar with science on a high school freshman level, something that his father noticed almost immediately. During Miles' first year of primary school, James devoted almost all of his free time to personally teaching Miles about science, during which he made an amazing discovery. One late Saturday afternoon, while James was tutoring Miles about noble gases, the neon gas in a test tube being observed by Miles suddenly and unexpectedly froze. It didn't take James long to figure out what had just happened. Miles had just used nanokinesis, an ability shared by his grandfather and two of his cousins.
There was little time for celebration, however, as not long after this power was discovered, Miles' little sister, Violet, was born. James wasted no time in having her tested, and found that she, too, could use nanokinesis. As she grew older, she developed a close bond with Miles, as she not only shared his thirst for knowledge, but she also shared his gift. Miles passed on the science he learned from his father to her, and to everyone's surprise, she learned even faster than he did. He should've known it was too good to last.
Six months before Miles graduated from primary school, there was a car crash. April got away with only minor cuts and bruises, but Violet wasn't so lucky. Her wounds were terrible, and the doctors were unable to save her. The entire family was devastated, but none of them so much as Miles, who was closer to Violet than anyone else. So distraught was he, that for the first few months his parents were sure he wouldn't be able to attend high school, and even after that, his personality had changed forever, becoming much more guarded and reserved.
James knew about the T'zenshin Institute from his niece and nephew, who were both nanokinetics and both attended the Institute. After much coaxing, April agreed that the Institute would be perfect for Miles, being the only place on the planet where he can learn to really use his talents. Miles' first few years at the Institute weren't too different to any other student's, with classes and studying taking up most of his time. In his eleventh year, however, he noticed that the Student Council was lacking members and facing growing opposition from the so-called Student Freedom Front, who were, in Miles' words, "a bunch of self-righteous, conceited wankers." Taking sympathy on the council, Miles decided to enroll as treasurer, which brings us to where we are today.
Secrets:
Miles hasn't told anyone about his little sister, mostly out of his fear of vulnerability.
Gift:
Miles has a little-known ability called nanokinesis, which allows him to alter the subatomic properties of a substance. In the right hands this ability is extremely powerful, allowing the user to perform nuclear transmutation (the conversion of one element or isotope to another), melt, boil, freeze, induce an electric current, and scan an object to determine its atomic makeup, just to name a few. The catch is that this ability is extremely difficult to use effectively, requiring both intense concentration and a firm grasp of physics and chemistry. To use nanokinesis, Miles has to understand the atomic composition of the target object, which he can learn by scanning it. Also, Miles must be within 20 meters of the object and be able to see it.
